She has applied for assistance at home to help her with her two autistic children but they said she doesnt need it, i think she does, i help out when ever i have the time to, what can i do to get help for her?? her husbund works to support the family.
Answer:
You are wonderful to help your friend. Surely she and her family have alot of challenges with two autistic children. Check with some organizations and support groups for autistic children. Maybe other parents can tell you and your friend how they received help. I am not sure she will get a live-in person such as a nanny or caretaker though. What sort of assistance does she need? Some states offer speech therapy and other services in the home through state programs. Make some calls to children's hospitals or children's wards of local hospitals. Call the local school district, even if the children are not yet of school age. They may know what's available for that type of autism. My mother provides respite care for autistic children (and children and teens with other diagnoses). She has them on the weekends - Friday evening or Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. This gives the families time to spend with their other children, or the husband and wife can spend time together. This program is administered through the state. It is in southeastern Pennsylvania. If you just happen to be in that area, contact me and I will give you contact information for that program. Care providers are carefully screened and trained in medication administration, first aid, CPR, AIDS prevention, and other skills. They must take continueing credit classes each year. The care occurs at the caregiver's home. Everyone living in the home is screened by the agency. Recently, my mother picked up a child at the child's home. The mother got out of bed and came downstairs after recent surgery to thank my mother for taking her child for respite. Check if there is a similar program available in your area.
