Should smokers get "Free" healthcare?

Hey,Up here in Canada, healthcare is covered under taxes. Everyone pitches in a bit, and then the government tries to squeeze by without running a deficit of more than a few million (rarely does)But I'm just wondering; with taxes, WE are paying for OTHER PEOPLE'S healthcare. Not that this would normally be a problem, but a couple of weeks ago, a seventy-two year old came in with a hip broken in eight places. It cost $75,650 to fix!THIS MAN RECIEVED HIS INJURY WHILE TAKING SKYDIVING LESSONS. And he was seventy-two.This got me thinking; what about smokers? They choose to smoke, which means they CHOOSE to get lung cancer or whatever.Should we be paying for self-inflicted injuries? Smoking isn't an "accident", I mean, its like they WANT to get lung cancer just to be a burden on society?Just wondering what your opinion is:Should the people have to pay for smoking-related illnesses, or should the individual pay??
Answer:
The question has been asked before especially regarding drug addicts: hard drugs, alcoholics and now smokers.I believe that they are obviously hurting themselves deliberately, so all damage costs should be waived in the face of their own choices, but we should pay for rehabilitation if at all possible. They are still our Canadians.
In the UK smokers pay 拢10bn in taxes. We more than pay for "free" treatment.
Afcorse not. If they did every 1 would become a smoker so that they can go for free healthcare.
I believe that Smokers should pay more taxes, in terms of their healthcare
So - you are sitting on your comfy chair on your computer and something makes you laugh so wildly that you fall off and hit the deck and break your wrist - now by your reckoning you shouldn't receive any healthcare coz it was self inflicted - you chose to read it and laugh yourself of your chair - get the point
lol i live in canada fore smokers its free and for non-smokers lol! we get health care for free. But the U.S should make health care free . i hope...
Smokers definately need mental health care.they need a check-up from the neck up!
Add a tax to their cigarettes that justs goes to smokers healthcare...this way they foot the bill!
If you`re willing to pay to for the f@gs to kill yourself, you should pay for the healthcare of the illnesses caused by smoking.
Here in the UK, smokers pay over 拢10 billion in tax, the cost of treating smoking related diseases costs 拢1.5 billion. Smokers more than pay for themselves!
I can see where you're coming from but there are other cases as well. There is obesity, should obese people have to pay for treatment for conditions caused by over eating. What about people who have accidents that could have been avoided. Injuries caused by playing sport are inevitable but they would not have happened if that person had not been participating. We should be worrying here in the UK though - the NHS is in that much debt, give it a few more years and I think Heathcare will be on an insurance basis similar to the US as it can't keep on going on the way it is.
its the tax from cigarettes that run the health sevice you seriously don,t think on the miserable little bit of taxes you contribute are making it work.
Well the problem with that would be where do you draw the line? Obese people are just as bad as smokers: if not worse. They make up most of the type 2 diabetics, they have more heart problems, strokes. In general they have alot more health issues than normal weight people.
Self inflicted injuries? How exactly would you define that? Because a lot of illnesses, injuries and medical conditions come from people's lifestyles. What about a woman who decides to have a baby - should she have to pay for her healthcare? Or a carpet layer who develops arthritis in their knees?
Smokers allready pay for their healthcare.I pay my national insurance contributions towards the health service.I also pay again through the duty on the cigarettes. So their is no Free healthcare for me.Why pick on smokers?Have a go at the druggies and drunks, they are a burden just the same.
Ok, how about this. You are driving to work and you, changing the CD, get in an accident. Break several bones, have some minor internal bleeding and need surgery. Your bill costs $183,623.
Now, it was your fault. You failed to "pay full time and attention."
So why should Canada pay for your bill?Smokers pay BILLIONS in taxes.
I get your point but where do you draw the line? People will say "I didn't mean to do it" and then what? It's a stupidity call. If you're stupid, do you deserve health care? Unfortunately in Canada, yes. My husband is a canadian and he moved to the US for that among many other reasons. Time to pack up buddy!!
Ok so if someone eats unhealthy food they souldn't be covered either because he/she knew what junk food will do to him/herself. There are things that just about everyone does that they shouldn't.
I am a smoker and no way, We should get free health Insurance
I live in the USA where healthcare costs are horrendous. I would gladly pay a little more tax for healthcare (even if it's for smokers) than having to pay $3,000 USD for a scan to see if I had appendicidis (which turned out negative). The US system totally pisses me off. You guys got it good up there in regards to healthcare. Please don't complain.
The individual should have to pay. Everyone knows how dangerous it is to smoke...
