Severed spinal cord - hope?

About 1 month ago, a member of my family had an accident which has left him with a severed spinal cord. Currently he is still lying flat trying to heal his broken back and the Doctors have said that he will now be paralysed from the waist down.
The other day my Sister visited him, and when there was no one else around, he showed her that if he pressed a point on his side it made his feet move. I thought that if the spinal cord was severed then there would be no nerves connecting to this area. I think that he is scared of asking the Doctors for further information. Has any body else had experience of this? what happened?
Answer:
It's most likely a reflex reaction - the nervous system can re-route some pathways after trauma.Normally, if the spinal chord has been totally severed, the damaged nerve celss cannot be regenerated. However, without wanting to give you false hope, there are cases of people defying medical knowledge and walking when they have been told they will never do so again etc.It is imperetive that any actions such as the one you have described be described to the medical team working with your family member. Even if it is only to explain it and reaffirm the bad news that this does not change the likely paralysis - until it is fully explained and understood, he will have false hope, which will grow if not checked and he will have further to fall if his hopes are built up.Good luck...
That's a hard question to answer. There are many nerves located in the spinal region. There are many spinal pathways that occur throughout the spine as well. Some cross over at certain points, while others stay on the ipsilateral (same) side. It is hard to say what was damaged in the accident. I guess it may be possible to move certain parts if damage did not occur there. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
i had the same thing happen after my acedent but nothing came of it i wish it did but you never know but you should definatly ask the docter good luck i hope he dosent have to go throght what iv gone throght
